CloudCatalyst communicates results for “Cloud Computing Trends 2014: Demystifying Cloud adoption barriers” survey
Lisbon, 28 October 2014 – For the last 2 months the CloudCatalyst Consortium executed a survey focused on identifying Cloud Computing Trends and the main characteristics and status regarding Cloud adoption. With the support of more than 300 experts it was possible to identify the first highlights of the Survey; identifying the latest trends, main market players, drivers and barriers for cloud adoption and decision making patterns according to different target groups.
Demystifying Cloud adoption barriers – How are Companies getting into the Cloud? What are the major trends and opportunities for entrepreneurs
1. IS THE COST THE MOST IMPORTANT ENABLER FOR CLOUD ADOPTION?
Cost is a relevant part of the choice (51%), mainly when it is referred to the transformation of CAPEX into OPEX. But over 60% of the respondents value the benefits associated with Cloud that enhance the service quality; the most important drivers are greater scalability, increased availability and faster access to the infrastructure.
2. IS OUR DATA LESS SECURE IN THE CLOUD?
The main inhibitors of cloud adoption are security, vendor lock-in and integration. It is interesting that, although security is considered as a main inhibitor, more than 60% of companies consider that security in the cloud is as, or more reliable than data security in a traditional on-premise model. Also, over 70% believe to be well informed on the location of information.
3. ARE IT DEPARTMENTS AN OBSTACLE? NO, IT DEPARTMENTS ARE LEADING THE CLOUD SHIFT.
According to our results, almost 70% of the Cloud solutions adopted are SaaS (66.5%) and the IaaS (57.6%). It is also verified that deployment models of Public and Private Cloud are still clearly predominant.
Nowadays, a major share of companies consider implementing Cloud Solutions internally (80%). This reveals that IT departments intend to anticipate the Cloud arrival, as a way to lead the implementation process.
However, it is expected that Hybrid Cloud – PaaS will experience the fastest short-term growth, as 26% of the respondents expect to use it in their organization in the following years.
4. AND WHAT ABOUT SERVICES & SOLUTIONS, WHAT ARE THE MAJOR TRENDS?
Currently, the most used services are E-mail and Online Storage; on the other hand services such as Back Office for Human Resources or Accounting and Business Intelligence are the least used services.
In the category of the Cloud Solutions the preferred clouds are Amazon, Microsoft, and Google – Public Solutions; and VMware, OpenStack and OpenNebula – Private Solutions.
The full final report will be included in the CloudCatalyst Go-to-the-Cloud service, available in June 2015. Stay tuned for more updates!
